Letters

If you listen to the news long enough, you will be convinced that our country is doomed. If you watch enough YouTube videos, you will believe that there’s no hope for our youth. If you follow Snapchat or Instagram, you will think that every millennial is a self-absorbed, narcissistic brat. The view from my foxhole was pretty bleak. Then something happened. The generation that I had judged so harshly, did something to amaze me. They sent me letters. Wednesday I noticed an oversized envelope on our kitchen counter addressed to LTC Womack. I opened the envelope to find 21 letters from Franklin STEAM Academy 8th graders, thanking me for my service. I have served my country for more than 25 years, and I had never received a single letter thanking me for my service. I was overwhelmed. After carefully reading each letter, I am convinced that there’s hope. Narcissism is real but, so is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
